Leading Experts Predict The Content Marketing Trends for 2014

Leading Experts Predict The Content Marketing Trends for 2014

2013 saw a number of new Internet marketing trends emerge along with a handful of new technologies, practices, and buzzwords. One of these many changes came in the form of Google’s various algorithm updates, which forced countless brands to revisit their existing SEO strategies and give them a much-needed face lift. Another new focal point came from the mobile side, and with 2014 fast approaching, nearly every brand on Earth is looking for ways to tailor their services for mobile. Despite the wide number of changes this past year, one thing stole the Internet marketing spotlight this year—content marketing. As we look towards 2014, it’s obvious that content marketing has already become the hottest trend in the industry—the go-to strategy for most, if not all, Internet marketers. Despite its growth, 2014 will finally bring a full-fledged, industry-wide adoption of content marketing standards and practices. So what are the top players in the internet marketing field expecting with this shift towards content marketing? Actually, thoughts are mixed.

Chase McMichael
According to cinematographers Chase McMichael, “2014 is all about going beyond experimenting, to full content marketing integration and executions.” Rather than debating its significance, brainstorming strategies, or trying to establish an appropriate content budget, 2014 will be the year where those who don’t have their content marketing strategies ironed out will be left in the dust.
With widespread adoption of content marketing looming on the horizon, many marketers are wondering what to expect in 2014. Well, if 2013 proved anything, it was that quality content is now the name of the game and that social shares and user engagement are the new benchmarks of a brand’s success. What does this mean for advertisers and publishers? It means that in order to stay relevant in the near future, marketers must be able to create and share original and compelling content that customers (or potential customers) are likely to read, comment, and share with their networks. Simply put, performance marketing in 2014 will be all about earned media.
Greg Secrist
BKA Content’s Greg Secrist says that he expects to see marketers place an even stronger emphasis on “high quality content, authorship content, and FAQ-type content” in 2014 order to gain traction and to rank better within organic search results. “In short, I think we will see a mind shift in which marketers start taking the SEO out of SEO, and instead, start focusing on creating content that resonates with users and answers their search questions.”
With advertisers and publishers readily adopting new content strategies, it seems as though the digital marketing industry has already accepted the concept of content marketing with open arms; however, there are some people who aren't on board.
David Spark
David Spark of Spark Media Solutions is one of those people, and his main concern is that advertisers and publishers are using “content” as click-bait, with the sole intention of selling something rather than providing the consumers with any valuable information.
“I’d like to see an end of the term ‘content marketing’ because I think’s it’s insidious,” Spark explains. “My wish for 2014 would be a quick death for the term ‘content marketing,’ but my 2014 prediction will be a major upheaval in click-bait content such as info graphics and listicles. Most brands will realize that these paper-thin content offerings only generate vanity metrics and don’t ever truly deliver value to the business’ bottom line. And herein lies the challenge of content marketing—publishers post pieces of “content” such as memes, viral videos, info graphics, etc., and see a lot of user engagement via comments, likes, and shares, which is currently being equated to a successful, revenue-producing campaign.

However, whether or not those “engaged users” actually perform the desired action often remains to be seen. In fact, in most cases when users are interacting with “branded content,” they’re not converting or producing any desired action, rather, they’re skimming over the content, liking and sharing, and moving on. More times than not, these shallow, yet viral pieces of content serve no purpose when it comes to actual business objectives, despite their propensity for inflating a brands “vanity metrics” and boosting perceived “user engagement.” So as 2014 approaches and the content marketing craze continues its takeover, we expect to see a lot of new practices arise and different trends come and go.The main thing that we expect to see in the New Year is for marketers to shy away from the cheap, clickbait content that inflates “vanity metrics,” and move more towards creating niche-specific, high quality content that provides values to their followers.
This type of content will not only entice fans to engage and interact with your brand, but it will also help on other fronts such as SEO, and most notably with revenue.”

The Truth about SEO and Call Tracking

The Truth about SEO and Call Tracking

What is Call Tracking?
Call tracking is a way for online marketers to track which sources, campaigns, and keywords generate phone calls. Hundreds of thousands of marketers across the U.S. and Canada use call tracking to close the loop on their marketing ROI calculations. Some of the biggest companies in the world use call tracking to measure the effectiveness of their PPC campaigns, SEO efforts, and retargeting. These companies value call data significantly. They spend a lot of money on it.
Marketing agencies also use call tracking. They use it as a way to prove their worth to their clients. It is especially popular among agencies that do PPC and SEO work.
Call tracking is, right now, a $1B industry. It is mainstream.

What is the Truth?
Call tracking, when used correctly does not hurt SEO. That’s the truth. Even most ardent call tracking opponents admit that.
The correct way to use call tracking is to use call tracking DNI. This doesn’t hurt SEO. We’ll discuss more about this later in the article.
The problem is that the call tracking industry has traditionally done a very poor job of educating marketers about what correct use of call tracking actually is.
Why Do Some Say Call Tracking Hurts SEO?
Because of NAP.
Google makes it very clear that Name Address and Phone number (NAP) have to be consistent across all online directories. Having different phone numbers in a ton of different places confuses Google’s algorithms and will hurt your SEO. This is why a few local marketers have written articles criticizing call tracking.
They’re right about one thing. Call tracking numbers should not be used in various directory listings across the web. That will hurt your SEO. This is common knowledge (or should be).
However, far too often articles attacking call tracking will lump all uses of call tracking (on-site Dynamic Number Insertion, primarily) together with erroneous use of call tracking in directories.
And, admittedly, some call tracking companies have not operated with care in this area. They have placed call tracking numbers all over directories without worrying about the consequences for their clients. This is bad business and bad for the industry.

The Real Future of Social is Search

The Real Future of Social is Search

I’m sure a lot of people would argue that it’s the other way around – that search’s future is social. Either way, the two fields are converging, and with billions of dollars riding on them, it’s going to be important to address the two as a dynamic duo.
To understand why the future of social is search, let’s look at why search has been turning its eye toward social. Search is all about findability. Whether paid or organic, the real goal of search is to be found by your target audience, and hopefully have them take a secondary action. That action may be as simple as a share or like, or as complex as moving down the funnel into a lead and then to a purchase. Social has provided an exceptional way for people, ideas and content to be found.
That said, social is a busy place. Multiple channels, millions of users, and a deluge of content mean the days of simple social findability are over. While networks rush to create filters, surface content they think you’ll find interesting, and make more relevant connections, marketers need to focus on being found from other angles. You can’t change the algorithms that Facebook, Google, or other organizations put in place – so what can you do?
You can create the content that is ever-present when people search for it.
What does that mean? Several things…
1. Focus on Phrases, Not Keywords
People are seeing things on social media, news articles, and even billboards and commercials and then searching for it later. Thanks to many of Google’s advances, they’re not typing in a single word most of the time, they’re writing an entire phrase, or even a description of something they saw.
Monitor the phrases that are included when people talk about your products and brands on social, and understand how it affects your content decisions.
A good example is viewing an Instagram photo of a new jacket that has been posted to Facebook. Later, when you are waiting in line at a store or sitting at your desk, searching for “short gray motorcycle jacket with collar.” You may not know or remember the brand but you like the content you saw and decided to search for it at a more convenient time.

2. Look for Concepts, Not Concrete Terminology

While this may sound like a repeat of number one, you should focus on discussions relevant to your brand. Here you will find a wealth of information to connect with existing audiences and identify new audiences. This means you can be creating content that touches on current topics. While many people think they’re already doing this, I’ll point out an example of what this looks like in practice.
Let’s use Nike as our example, and specifically Nike running shoes.
A traditional approach will include monitoring conversations for: Nike, run (and variations like running and runner), shoes, and cross training; as well as competitors like Asics, Reebok, etc. In the past few years we’ve evolved to monitoring for things such as: Marathon, trails, and road race.
The next evolution should focus on the conversations that are happening around running and running shoes on social, and expand Nike’s awareness on things like: Carbohydrates, personal trainer, joint pain, weather predictions, etc. These come from tweets, Instagram photos and Facebook posts like this one.
For example, Nike could do marathon-inspired recipes and content, along with shoe suggestions for users that are searching for pre-run meals. The company could also display store information alongside searches for local personal trainers. Another great way to engage would be to serve up content for cushioning running shoes when people mention runner-related injuries.

3. Create Content That is Socially Searchable & Consumable

Knowing people are going to be on social channels and inundated with lots of “stuff” is only half the battle. Now you need to make sure you’re creating content that works well for those mediums and is also easily found when users search.
Let’s look at an example from my company, GinzaMetrics. Each week, we do a Google Hangout called FOUND Fridays. FOUND Fridays discuss search and content marketing, and feature guests that are experts in various realms of the industry. Topics are gathered based on what’s trending that week, and specifically mined from conversations being had on social media.
The Hangout is conducted live, giving the audience a chance to tweet questions to #FOUNDFriday. It is then posted to:
  • YouTube
  • SlideShare
  • Our Blog
The Google Hangout is publicized on Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook to the GinzaMetrics audience, as well as the audience of whomever is guest speaking.
The YouTube video provides an opportunity for increased visibility on Google as well as transcription.
SlideShare is great because you can pull key points and turn them into an illustrated, easily consumable format. SlideShare also has great SEO value with a full transcript included below that is findable by search engines.
